Our family moved to Dubai in November 2007. I remember that very day. Our youngest, our Dubai baby as he is now known, was 9 weeks old. To this day he won’t wear socks (unless they are football socks) or closed shoes (unless they are trainers or football boots!). Truly, a Dubai baby. The Twiglets (as our twins are lovingly known) settled into desert life swimmingly, and have spent more of their lives here than in either of their home countries.
Having worked in two different jobs in the past 5 years, I am taking time out to smell the desert roses and finally learn to navigate my way to Satwa without sweating my bodyweight in near misses and ending up in Sharjah!
Not being a fan of heat (humid, dry, searing……for that matter, any kind), I did not think we would stay beyond our original visa term of 3 years. Life here can take a little getting used to – crazy drivers, being told shops don’t stock ‘extra large’ even though you are only a size 12, gardeners who kill more plants than they manage to nurture, limo birthday parties for kids, kids who think ski lessons in the desert are a compulsory afterschool activity…..the list goes on!
However, 7+ years on and I can think of no better place to call home.
Shukran Dubai!

Dear Dubai Mum,
My name is Ashlee. I’m co-founder of The Youshare Project, with the mission to connect people around the world through stories. I recently stumbled across your blog and think it’s fascinating to hear your stories about living in Dubai. I wonder if you would be interested in writing or sharing a piece with the project? It could be something on why you love living in Dubai or your top 5 favorite things, or something else. If this sounds interesting to you, I would love to email you directly with more information and formally invite you to share a story with the project.
You have my email address and website (although please note the site is still under development). I hope to hear from you soon.
Best,
Ashlee
